Located in Korea’s deep south, you’ll find a long shadow cast by the majestic shadow of Jirisan Mountain in Jeollanam Province. Within this shadow, the valleys and lush natural scenery of Gurye County can be found.
From Saturday, March 21 to Sunday, March 29, Gurye County will be home to their annual Sansuyu Festival, which features blooming sansuyu trees throughout the countryside, creating a target-rich environment for photo enthusiasts.
If you catch the tail end of the festival, you may be fortunate to witness the onset of another one. The Seomjingang Riverside Cherry Flower Festival comes into full swing with its bounty of blooming cherry blossoms, along with themed events including a paragliding contest, face-painting and hands-on experiences with arts and crafts.
For photo buffs and admirers of Buddhist architecture, Saseongam Hermitage rests near the top of nearby Osan Mountain, offering unforgettable views and photo ops for anyone willing to make the hike. If you’re seeking more cultural immersion than that, the renowned Hwaeomsa Temple is also in the area.
Looking for a little water recreation? Jirisan Oncheon Land has plenty of indoor and outdoor options to get you both soaked and relaxed.
Wondering where to stay in order to make this into a weekend? If you are interested in sleeping in a Korean traditional hanok-style guesthouse, Omi-dong is just outside of Gurye Township and has dwellings that range from (non-peak rates) 80,000won (max. 4 people) to 250,000won (max. 10 people). Looking for something more modern? The aptly named Good Morning Sunshine Pension is located further east of Omi-dong, featuring non-peak rates ranging from 70-350,000won per night, with maximum occupancy between 2-18 people, depending on the room.
