Ulsan Whale Festival depicts the life of whalers and making Ulsan a central city for whale fishing.
Ulsan Whale Festival?is one of?Ulsan’s most important festivals. The festival starts on April 24, 2014 to April 27, 2014 at two areas in Ulsan. One area is along Taehwagang River, and the other is Jangsaengpo Ocean Park. It is mainly operated mainly in the form of Ulsan’s local folk programs and hands-on programs. The traditional Ulsan method of whale fishing is created off the coast of Ulsan. The recreation of this act is based on the historical evidence that has been uncovered throughout the years. A large number of people are dressed in traditional outfits to perform “Madangnori” which demonstrates the art of whale fishing.
Ulsan has been the habitat for migratory whales swimming in the ocean off the western east coast since prehistoric times. This made Jangsaengpohang Port an outpost of whalers. Ulsan Whale Festival holds various programs recreating whale fishing through historic research and evidence. Other events centered on the theme of whales will also be present. Watching the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean at Gyeunposeongji and Ganjeolgot is another popular attraction to see while attending the festival. Ulsan Whale Festival also puts in effort to revive the Korea whale culture and celebrates Ulsan’s history of whale fishing.
