The 14th annual Mungyeong Chasabal Festival has the theme of “harmony of clay, fire, and wind.” This festival celebrates the identity of Mungyeong’s traditional ceramic ware based on the oldest kiln called Mangdaengi in Korea. The festival will take place at the most famous, Mungyeong Saejae. You can expect a festival which is in harmony with excellent scenic beauty of nature, and the traditional festival is sure to never fall short of your expectation.
For centuries, Korean pottery has been regarded as one of the best displays of artistic talent throughout the world.?Mungyeong is a renowned pottery-producing center with over 900 years of history. This festival celebrates the traditional Chasabal (tea bowl). Chasabal is modest, simple and the rough exterior creates its unique beauty. The exterior line of a cup stretches upward that resembles a dragon flying forcefully to the sky. Another word that is used for Chasabal is Dawan or Chawan. Once this is made, it is put into a kiln called Mangdaengi. This is a cone-shaped clay brick that is about 13cm wide and 25cm tall. Mangdaengi bricks are fire-resistant and used to make the upper part of a kiln round. This kiln is composed of five to six domed rooms which are connected side by side. The rooms become larger and larger as they are located farther from the entrance of the kiln. It is most ideal for Mangdaengi to be located on a 15° slope. There are various facilities around a kiln, such as a workhouse, a treadmill, a hole for settling clay sediment, a clay refinery, and a household. Learn about this amazing time-honored craft from some of the area’s best Chasabal masters and even create your own traditional tea bowl.
