Gyeryongsan Mountain God Festival
This is traditional festival succeeded from the mountain belief of Baekje through Unified Silla, Goryo, and Joseon Dynasties as national ceremony but discontinued in the former period of the 20th century ruled by Japan since Confucians, the supervising party of this festival, gave up opening the festival due to struggle against Japan for restoring national independence. The reason why Jungakdan was conserved is that that altar was located in the inside of Sinwonsa (Temple) and under the protection by the Temple administration.
This festival was restored by Sim U-seong, head of Gongju Folk Drama Museum, and is being opened March 16 or about of lunar calendar every year. The feature of Gyeryongsan (Mt.) Mountain God Festival is a comprehensive mountain god festival including Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shamanism.
