Daegaya Festival will take place again in Goryeong County.
Daegaya was a city-state of the Gaya confederacy during the Korean Three Kingdoms period. Present-day Goryeong County?was where Daegaya used to be located. Goryeong is a county in the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. Daegu is on the east, Hapcheon to the south, Geochang to the west, and Seongju is to the north. Daegaya existed for about 520 years. This city-state developed quickly and played a major role in the Gaya confederacy in the 5th century AD. Daegaya was advanced in steel-making craft but didn’t get as much spotlight due to the surrounding kingdoms of Baekje and Silla. In 562 AD, Daegaya fell to the armies of Silla as part of their revenge plan for the Gaya confederacy attacking Silla back in 554 AD.
The Daegaya Festival plans to take place in April this year. Goryeong County hosts this festival every year in remembrance of their history and to share it with the rest of Korea. During the festival, they take you back in time to depict how the people during the Daegaya days lived on a daily basis. They usually include all of the major historical stories that happened during the Daegaya era. Visitors are able to tour around the county to view the great sites of where the leaders of Daegaya are buried along with other great artifacts of Daegaya. While touring around Goryeong during the festival, visitors can get a sweet taste of their famous strawberries. It is the most sweetest anyone can taste in Korea. Look forward to more detailed information of this year’s Daegya Festival.
