Two things that the drama, “Suspicious Housekeeper” made me realize:
Drama, Suspicious Housekeeper attracted me at first because Hallyu star, Choi Jiwoo hasn’t made an appearance on TV for a while. She is the housekeeping protagonist in this drama series. Along with the values that this drama portrays, it makes me think about my personal relationship with the members of my family. This drama makes me think of two things: a mother’s value and expressing emotions. How much do you appreciate your mother? Do you think it is natural for all the things that your mother has done for you? Somebody can do a mother’s chores but he/she can’t do it with care and affection like a true mother. Although you know about a mother’s devotion and feel her care, it’s useless if you don’t express your feelings and gratitude towards her. It’s not even Mother’s Day and I’m getting sappy with this topic. But, you know, it is the holidays and usually a time for family and loved ones. Living in Korea, expressing emotions seems more difficult than when I lived in America. Has this changed for anyone else, too? Although this drama ended, I think I came to appreciate my mother even more than before. Now, my other dilemma is to express this to her. How? Suggestions? Just like a love relationship between couples, expressions of love must be shown in a “mutually undying love” between family members. THANK YOU, MOM!
Summary: This is an adaption of the Japanese drama I Am Mita. Your Housekeeper. The main characters are a mysterious housekeeper Park, Boknyeo (her name means to have lots of luck but it’s old fashioned name in Korean), her new client Eun Sangcheol and his four children. Park is an expressionless woman with unique skills in household chores. She does as she is told, hiding her feelings. When I saw her for the first time, she looked just like a robot playing this role. This drama starts from a mother who has left the family. After the mother’s death, all of the family members get lost and don’t know where they should go. They feel unsettled. Throughout the story, the family members are embarrassed and confused of how to cope with the loss of their mother. The mother’s devotion to house chores or roles as a mother and wife was taken for granted by all of the family members and this is realized after her death. This drama shows how important a mother’s role or value is through her non-existence paradoxically.
A hired housekeeper, Park, tries to reenact everything what the mother would have done: cleaning the house, cooking, and consultation time at school for children. The only difference is she gets paid about what she did. Park doesn’t know what to do about emotional areas so she continuously asks, “What am I supposed to do it? How?” and she rejects anything that has connections to her emotions. She finds the mother’s will and knows that the mother has some scars deep in her heart and suffered from all the house chores that nobody appreciates. As the drama approaches to the end, Boknyeo opens her mind and changes. She has some personal scars she has gotten from the past so she hides her feelings and behaves like an emotionless woman.
