In case you missed it, this past weekend kicked off the annual Korea Queer Festival in Seoul's Hongdae district, which runs until June 16. Each year, the festival draws crowds of both Koreans and foreigners to participate. Judging from media footage, one might assume that only foreigners in Korea are the ones who are 'afflicted' with having these impure thoughts. But Korea's famed transgender, Harisu, is the parade headliner and has been able to put more of a Korean stamp on openly gay culture.
But there was another 'Korean sheep in wolf's clothing' in Hongdae, last week. A young Korean military cadet was on vacation leave from his duties near the DMZ and opted to sneak into a women-only jjimjilbang, as a way to sneak peeps at naked women. The cadet snuck into the women's locker room in the middle of the night and donned women's jjimjilbang attire, covered his head with a towel and stuck a rolled up towel under his shirt, to appear as having breasts. Apparently an effeminate-looking man to begin with, he escaped attention for a while, as he calmly sat on a massage chair in the locker room and started peeking out from under the towel hanging over his head. A university girl eventually began to feel suspicious about him and reported him to staff. Jjimjilbang staff confirmed on CCTV that he entered into the jjimjilbang wearing men’s clothes and then went over to the women’s locker room. The man eventually returned to the men’s side and started to take a rest, but was later caught by the police, once they showed up. At the police station, he first denied what he did, but finally admitted to it after the police showed him the CCTV footage. According to police, “He looks pretty for a guy, but one would never have expected that he would boldly walk into a women’s locker room.”
