An American hagwon teacher in Gwangju was able to evade Korean Customs with smuggling in marijuana in peanut butter, back in January. However, the Kentucky native tried to do the same illegal deed again, this past month, but was caught by customs. Gwangju Ilbo is also reporting that “대마초를 흡입한 상태에서 영어를 가르쳐온 외국어 강사가 광주에서도 적발됐다”, which translates that he was literally teaching while under the influence of marijuana, however, could also mean that he was smoking pot during the period since January while he was employed at the school, but not necessarily high during his classes. Not sure if the ambiguousness was intentional or not.
Key point: Pot is obviously not very welcome in Korea, regardless of how hard one tries. If you need it in your system, there’s always teaching work available in the states that have decriminalized pot.
