Wine-lovers are increasing in Daegu, a city known for its popular forms of rice wine.
The local wine scene has exploded of late, where one may now find various wine clubs, wine restaurants, wine-making courses, and wine vendors throughout the city. And there appears to be no end in sight to the wine boom in the city.
At present, there are 14 wine establishments in the local area. There are three popular retailers where people are flocking to. In Hwanggeum-dong of Suseung-gu, you can find Segye Liquor (세계주류) (053) 783-6333, which has been around since 1993. PAC in Interburgo Hotel (988-9699) opened two years ago. And Bordo in Hyomok (745-7704) opened this year, which are all selling over 800 kinds of wine.
These vendors have been quite active in promoting the wine craze in Daegu. Segye Liquor created the ‘Daegu Wine Club’ last November and entertains club members at 7 pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. And ‘Bordo’ has wine-making classes at 7:30 pm, every Thursday.
One thing that any seasoned vet or novice to the wine scene should learn about, is ‘corkage charge’. If you are a wine connoisseur who likes to bring your own wine to wine-drinking establishments, many of these places will charge a modest fee to discourage patrons from bringing their own and instead buying the house wines.
The cost ranges 2,000won-50,000 won in Seoul and from 5000won to 20,000 won in Daegu. Regardless if you opt to bring in your own wine or not, it’s considered to be good wine etiquette to order one bottle of house wine after you enjoy your wine amongst your friends.
